A DRAIN ON THEIR RICE BOWL
Padi farmers like Rosdan Khamis, 37, accept that theirs is a life of toil. But the padi farmer, and 20 others like him, of Kampung Tedong Pantai in Merlimau, Malacca have also poor irrigation and pests to deal with. They stand to lose between RM2,000 and RM5,000 if there is a hot spell during the harvest season, which will dry out their fields and expose their crops to brown plant-hoppers (bena perang). Rosdan, who farms about 4.9ha of padi, says the badly planned irrigation system is to blame. “I face losses of up to RM5,000 during harvest in the dry season. The padi fields do not get enough water. Whenever it rains during this period, the water dries in about a week. I have to channel water from a drain about 100m away using my own pump.” He says if the authorities built a ditch across the centre of the padi fields, the problem faced by the farmers would be solved.
